"Light the Night" and WSR Giving Back

Charity and finding ways of giving back have always been a part of Nathan and Lynn Weldon's upbringing. As big believers in helping out in the community, they wanted to use work life as a way of contributing to an organisation they both believed in.

Before starting WSR, Nathan and Lynn helped out with Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" events in the Rochester and Buffalo, New York alongside Wilson Farms, a local convenience store chain. Wilson Farms provided the coffee and some volunteers, while Nathan and Lynn provided the machines and brewed all the coffee on site.

This participation started 10 years ago. Just 5 years ago, when Nathan and Lynn started Weldon Service and Repair, they committed further by being a Gold Sponsor and donating money weekly throughout the year as well. (A good option for small businesses who want to give back to charity!)

Through the past ten years of helping out with "Light the Night", we've gotten to know the Central New York LLS staff - a group of just four employees! They do an amazing job each year and their division's return to the cause is one of the highest in the country. We're so proud to participate alongside such an amazing bunch.

We've found ourselves looking forward to both the Rochester and the Buffalo event every year and working side by side with the same volunteers at our table.

Nathan and Lynn have long held the opinion that when you can give back, you should. Community growth and charity are important to our company. The pictures posted here are from this past September's Buffalo walk. Take a look and we hope to see you out there next year. If you do walk, make sure to come by for a cup of coffee at our table and say hello!

One of the walk's cutest participants.

Lanterns are lit to help light the walk around the park.
A sight to behold!

Company Owners

In 2010, the company where Nathan Weldon was employed as a service manager, was going out-of-business. One of the customers, Wilson Farms, still wanted Nathan on board as their go-to service provider. Nathan knew what he was good at and there were not a lot of companies hiring. So, together with his business savvy wife and co-worker/side-kick Jay, Nathan created Weldon Service & Repair with just one customer to start.

One of Nathan's many talents is recognizing the best qualities in people and utilizing the things they're good at. He looked to his family's individual talents first; having one son design the logos, another helping with the tech, and eventually both his daughters came on board bringing their different talents as well. Slowly but surely Nathan hired on more and more people, while still maintaining the feel and benefits of a small, family business.

Here's a little bit more about Lynn and Nathan Weldon. We hope you've enjoyed these employee profiles and getting to know our company a little better.

From the Very Beginning

From the very beginning when Nathan and Lynn Weldon formed Weldon Service & Repair we've had one man by our side the whole way. Jerry (Jay) has worked with Nathan many years prior to the formation of WSR. He's our Chief Financial Officer and so much more. He even holds a special place in the Office Dog's heart, who spends most his time staring down the treat jar in Jay's office. So here's a treat for you, a little bit about Jay!

Benefits of working for a small company: Company is more flexible, and no corporate politics.
Common mistake you see that would make life easier if corrected: Lack of communications. Talk it out! Also customers not having a preventative maintenance program for equipment and not properly cleaning equipment to achieve the ultimate taste from their beverages.

Area Managers Extraordinaire

With the crew of service technicians we have on the road, we need some skilled people to help manage who goes out to certain calls and keep track of everything that needs to be done with our customers. That's why we employee two of the best area service managers. These are two gentlemen that know how to juggle many things and keep it all together without letting anything drop.

Hamilton Sage

Favorite part of working for WSR: Being able to see different people every day.
Benefits of working for a small company: Don't have to deal with a lot of the corporate bureaucracy. You're a member of the team.
Common customer mistake you see that would make life easier if corrected: Double checking before putting in a call.
Favorite local food(WNY)/favorite weekend activity: Main Street Pizza in Batavia, NY, and on the weekends I'm usually doing something involving my maple syrup business. (Check out Hamilton's Family's Maple Syrup here!)
Favorite caffeinated beverage: Mt Dew
How do you take your coffee: double double two cream, two sugar

Mike Thornton

Job Title: Service Manager of Eastern Region
Favorite part of the job: Having the opportunity to build and maintain relationships with my customers to provide them with the service they have come to expect.
Benefits of working for a small company: The family atmosphere.
Common customer mistake you see that would make life easier if corrected: I don't feel there is a common mistake, most are willing to learn.
Favorite local food(CNY) and favorite weekend activity: I would recommend the Brae Loch in Cazenovia, and on weekends I enjoy snowmobiling in the winter and beating HPI R/C cars with my traxxas slash. (Editors Note: That sounds way more exciting than my weekends. So I'm going to steal that weekend idea, thanks Mike!)
Favorite caffeinated beverage: Sugar with a side of coffee
How do you take your coffee: see above.

You know what to do: Like, Like, Comment. It's the easiest things to do to enter the raffle. Winner drawn on Wednesday, July 1st! Well, maybe vegetarians....okay, is it Friday yet?

Wednesday Webcrew!

As it's Wednesday and I enjoy a little alliteration, I decided now is a good time to introduce you to our webcrew. (Yes, I made up that word. I have a degree in English lit which effectively gives me the license to do whatever I want with the language. ...Or at least that's how I interpret the degree.)

Webcrew Runs On....

My brother, his wife and I comprise the Weldon Service and Repair web team. (Better? I'm not sure. Working it out...)

First up:

Nate Weldon Jr.

Job Title: Co-Director of IT Department and Software Architect
Details of job: Making sure all the tech runs correctly throughout the company. Evaluating new standards, tools, platforms and technologies. Implementing new features and fixing existing bugs. Integrating our software with third party systems.
Common mistake you see that would make life easier if corrected: Getting information on tech problems early. (Editor's Note: The office staff are technically the customers in this noted, sir!)
Favorite part of working for WSR: Getting to evaluate new technology, and working on new and different projects.
Benefits of working for a small company: Getting to see software features implemented from start to finish and having those features create a positive impact on the company.
Benefits of working with your family: Low stress environment (Editor's Note: hahahahahahaha....oh're not joking....), and free coffee (Editor's Note: YES.)
Favorite food (WNY) and favorite thing to do on the weekend: Steak hoagie, and hanging out with my wife and son on the weekends
Favorite caffeinated beverage: Red eye
How do you take your coffee: Strong with a double shot and half & half

Nate and Estelle

Then we have his lovely wife and my sister-in-law:

Estelle Weldon

Job Title: Co-Director of IT Department and Chief of Software Development
Details of Job: Develop software for the company. Working on the website and creating internal tools for service request management.
Common mistake that would make life easier if corrected: Mistakes will be made; it is hard to prevent them, just make sure you learn from them.
Favorite part of working at WSR: Being able to create tools that improve the process or make other people's workdays easier. The fancy office coffee machine is also really nice.
Benefits of working for a small company: I get to see the result of my work immediately. Working for a large company on a very large project I often only work on a tiny part and have no idea the impact on the customer.
Benefits of working with your family: Lunch meetings! (Editor's Note: Hear! Hear! Agreed!)
Favorite food(WNY) and favorite weekend activity: India House, and relax with the family
Favorite caffeinated beverage: See next question.
How do you take your coffee: 1/2 coffee and 1/2 hot chocolate

And then there's me:

Lindsay Weldon

Job Title: Social Media Manager
Details of job: Twitter/Facebook/Blog upkeep, social media outreach and customer connection initiatives.
Favorite part of working for WSR: We rock at customer service. I love the free coffee and that we can have an Office Dog. I also love that the companies allows my humour to run rampant in my work.
Common mistake that would make life easier if corrected: A personal mistake would be not getting to things in a timely fashion and then trying to do them all at once. I should stop that. A customer mistake would be telling me things last minute or in an afterthought "oh maybe Lindsay could have helped with that" because yes I can and please tell me sooner.
Benefits of working for a small company: Makes communication within the company much easier. Everyone is happier. And it's easier within a small company to customise your job duties so that you work on what needs to be done and not doing things that don't matter in the long run.
Benefits of working with your family: The ability to learn on the job, ask questions or openly discuss parts of the job without feeling like there may be a negative impact because of that. (Downside...we are able to talk about work a lot outside of the office as well. It just melts into your every day life. Meeting at 6am while still in your pjs over coffee and before breakfast? Sure, why not?)
Favorite food and weekend activity: India House or Dinosaur BBQ, and on weekends I like to go to the theatre or take road trips.
Favorite caffeinated beverage: coffee or milky English tea
How do you take your coffee: black

And in case you were wondering: Nate and Estelle's WSR pictures will be added to our website when we have them, I took mine with a selfie stick and I am not ashamed, and I'm the "Editor" in case you did not pick up on that fact.

I'll be drawing names for our raffle on Wednesday, July 1st so make sure you "like" the company Facebook page, "like" an employee post and answer the question that accompanies the post. You can enter as much as you like and we don't mind if it's employees of the company or friends and family of company employees. (Editor's Note: Editor will not be putting her name in since it's the Editor that will be drawing the name.)

Cheers and happy Wednesday!

Service Tech Bob

And now for another of our service technicians to introduce:

Bob Milligan

Job Title: Service Technician
Favorite part of working for WSR: Having parts on the truck. I've worked for companies in the past that haven't done that and it makes things more inconvenient.
Benefits of working for a small company: Freedom to do what needs to be done.
Common customer mistake you see that would make life easier if corrected: When the customer doesn't call in a problem when it occurs and they wait till we show up for a different issue. That can make the problem much worse, or we may not be able to deal with one problem if we're there for a different problem.
Favorite local food(WNY)/favorite weekend activity: Texas Roadhouse and playing golf on the weekends.
Favorite caffeinated beverage: coffee
How do you take your coffee: sugar and milk

Favorite local food(WNY)/favorite thing to do on the weekend: Duffy's Wings, and ATV riding.
Favorite caffeinated beverage: Code Red
How do you take your coffee: creamer and sugar

Our Dog Friday

Ladies and Gentlemen, today I'd like to introduce you to a very special Weldon Service & Repair employee.  He just happens to be the only employee (and, dare I say, only creature on God's green earth) who doesn't enjoy a weekend. Welcome to our official Office Dog, Charlie.

Charlie Weldon
Wait...what do you mean it's almost the weekend?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Weldon Service & Repair began five years ago but it wasn't until a year after it's start, when one of Nathan's daughters, Lindsay, started working for the company, that Charlie was introduced to the office. That moment he began his very important position of coming in every day and being the official Office Dog.

It started with that very first scary, tentative step into the warehouse. Everyone that visited was a potential criminal that he would let Lindsay fight while he barked from a safe spot under her desk. Since then he has become everyone's best friend...maybe because everyone knows where the dog treats are kept... And that may be because Charlie will show them, even if they're a stranger, by staring at the treat box and drooling upon their arrival into the warehouse. This is how they know what is expected of them.

It's a very safe bet to say that Charlie LIVES for the office. Weekends are a disappointing time where he looks with hope upon anyone heading to their car, only to have those hopes dashed when they don't say the magical phrase "Wanna go to work?"

Job Title: Office Dog
Details of job: Eating all the treats, sleeping in each bed in each office in the warehouse before end of day, greeting the UPS guy and getting a treat, greeting the FedEx guy and getting a treat, checking on Tom in the warehouse, greeting all the service office dog's job is never done as long as there is someone around to give a belly rub.
Favorite part of working for WSR: Treats. I mean...getting that satisfying feeling from a hard day's work.
Benefits of working for a small company: Everyone knows my name. And I can easily find all the treat jars. Also, knowing the name of the people who pick up my poop. They're good people. They're not just a number to me.
Common mistake you see that would make life easier if corrected: When Dad and Mom forget me at home. And I can smell they went to the office without me. Don't do that.
Favorite local food(WNY)/favorite thing to do on the weekend: Biscuits at work, also I have a few really good bones you should try. Or maybe not, I don't really wanna share. And I hate weekends. No work then. I sleep through the weekends. But when we go in to work on the weekends that's my favorite.
Favorite caffeinated beverage: No. Water.
How do you take your coffee: No. Water. Can I have a biscuit instead? Wait, what are you offering me? Can I have a toy?

Enjoy your Friday friends, and make sure to like this post on Facebook and comment to be entered into the raffle. Charlie is not one of the raffle prizes. Sorry. But I could throw in a framed photo of of Charlie if you really want it. And who wouldn't?

WSR Bench Tech

Today I'd like to introduce to you our bench technician at Weldon Service & Repair. Tom Irwin has been with us from almost the very beginning of this company's formation and, before that, has worked with the COO of the company. Good coworkers are hard to find and when you do find them, you keep hold of them. Tom works in our warehouse and is one of the people the Office Dog likes to scour the building for to check on. Check him out!

Favorite part of working for WSR: The people.
Benefits of working for a small company: There is better communication between everyone with a smaller company.
Common mistake you see that would make life easier if corrected: Not keeping up with regular maintenance of your machine as a customer can cause problems. (Editor's Note: At WSR we are able to provide our customers with a regular maintenance program to help combat this problem. Ask us about it if it's something you'd be interested in!)
Favorite local food(WNY)/favorite weekend activity: D&R Depot's Mac N Cheese, and I like hunting and fishing on the weekend.
Favorite caffeinated beverage: Diet Coke
How do you take your coffee: Not much of a coffee drinker.

We're half way through the week. Grab a Diet Coke and breath a sigh of relief. Also make sure you "like" and comment on this post on our Facebook page. Because everyone loves a raffle. And you can enter every day. YAY!

Inventory Manager and Office Dog Wrangler

Today I'd like to introduce our next employee to you. Her name is Lauren Weldon and she is the Weldon Service & Repair Inventory Manager (and Office Dog Wrangler). She's been with the company for a few years now, and with the family for absolutely ages. She is the youngest Weldon at the company, and mentions that frequently to her older siblings.

Lauren Weldon
Job title: Inventory Manager
Details of job: Liaison between the office and all of the part vendors. Maintain inventory levels within the warehouse. Also, I keep the office dog well fed (and so do many other of the office staff. Favorite part of working at WSR: All the free coffee. (Editor's Note: We get the good stuff too! Thanks Jody!)
Benefits of working for a small company: You get to know everyone really well and you're not just a number in the system.
Benefits of working with your family: Relaxed atmosphere working with your family. Also, we get to have the dog in the office.
Common mistake you see made that would make life easier if corrected: Rereading emails before sending them out to make sure the receiving party will understand what you're saying.
Favorite food(WNY) and your favorite weekend activity: John's Tex Mex in South Wedge in Rochester, and bowling on the weekends.
Favorite caffeinated beverage: Diet Coke
How do you take your coffee: Black

We hope you enjoyed this introduction! If you want to be entered into our raffle for a slew of delightful prizes, such as some of our stellar coffee and a gift card for FOOD (who doesn't love food? I love food. And apparently the office dog loves food more than anything) than make sure you like and comment on this post on our Facebook page!
